How to play
Get the water from the brass spring to every pipe on the board. A new puzzle every day.
The goal
The board is 7 by 7 tiles. In the middle sits a brass spring, and every other tile holds a piece of pipe that has been turned the wrong way. Turn the tiles until water flows from the spring through every single pipe. A pipe turns blue as soon as water reaches it, so you can always see how far you've got.
These examples are 5 by 5. The daily puzzle is bigger, but works the same way.
Turning tiles
- Click or tap a tile to turn it a quarter turn clockwise.
- Right-click to turn it back the other way. Phones have no right-click, so there it takes three taps.
- On a keyboard, the arrow keys move between tiles and Enter or Space turns the one you're on.
- The puzzle is solved the moment the last pipe fills. There's no button to press.
The pieces
- Dead endWhere a branch stops.
- StraightOnly two different positions.
- BendTurns the water round a corner.
- T-junctionSplits the water three ways.
- CrossRare, and never needs turning.
What every solved board looks like
Every puzzle is built by laying a working network of pipes first and then scrambling the tiles, so there's always a solution, and it follows three rules:
- No open ends. Every pipe end meets another pipe end. Nothing points off the edge of the board or into the closed side of a neighbour.
- No loops. Water reaches each tile by exactly one route, so the pipes branch out from the spring like a tree and never join up again.
- Nothing left out. Every tile is part of the same network. Two dead ends never face each other, because that pair would be cut off from the spring.
About one puzzle in nine has two solutions. Either one counts.
Tips for solving
- Start at the corners and edges. No pipe can point off the board, so a bend in a corner can only sit one way, a T-junction on an edge must keep its flat side to the edge, and a straight on an edge has to run along it.
- Work inward from what's certain. Each tile you fix tells its neighbours which side they must open, or keep closed.
- Don't trust the water alone. Blue only means a pipe is connected to the spring right now, not that it's in its final position. A wet tile can still point the wrong way for the tiles beyond it.
- If a turn would close a loop, it's wrong. The finished board never has one.
- Turn the short way. Every tile is at most two turns from where it belongs: one clockwise, one back, or two for a half turn. On the ranked puzzle every extra turn lowers your accuracy, so think before you click.
